From the first page, this book explained odd things that I had observed all my life, but not understood. For instance, our "monkey brain" can try to convince us that an unexpected snub at work can feel irrationally like death, because being expelled from the primate group did mean death for our ancestors. Thus it will clarify puzzling feelings that one is at a loss to explain with our rational brain. It will help one grasp in an amazingly user friendly way recent advances in neurological science. You will come to appreciate the complexity of how evolution led to your having essentially 3 brains, and your awareness of this will lead to an application in your everyday life that results in their working more consciously and smoothly together. This is certainly one of the most interesting and helpful books that I have ever read. I am a retired CA Dept. of Corrections parole officer and correctional officer. I also have worked in group homes, and at a psychiatric hospital, and as a 91G20 (behavioral science specialist) in the army. I think anyone in any similar lines of work would find it inspiring and illuminating.

ConCom Conflict Communication A New Paradigm in Conscious Communication edition by Rory Miller Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

A clear presentation of why we react to others and why they react to us with practical solutions to conflict deescalation and avoidance. The author has drawn on his experiences with potentially violent and violent people to provide an understanding of what is happening and how to eliminate or minimize destructive patterns. This book is helpful in guiding one to avoid conflict and maximize results in interpersonal relationships between friends, family and business associates. His description of lizard brain- monkey brain- human brain provides a simple but clear and useful framework for moving off scripts when appropriate.
If you have to deal with people be it in a self-defense, business, school, or in day to day life this book will help you deal with and avoid conflict. The book is written by people that have been there done that, found out what did and did not work so it isn't a book by academics in the truest sense. Don't expect lots of citations from scientific studies just what the author found to have worked for him.
I've read, and learned from, Rory's first two books "Meditations on Violence" and "Facing Violence." He has the rare gift of being able to address very subtle cues in a clear and easily understood manner. Stuff myself, as well as numerous experts in the field, have observed and attempted to articulate in our crude fashion, Rory simply explains matter of factly, allowing you to see it from an entirely new perspective and finally grasp and understand the concept.

I've done security and investigations for many years, most of that time on the street, often with criminals, substance abusers, or the mentally disturbed. I've seen many aspects of the human condition, yet I learn new things from Rory's work. I am currently reading ConCom for the third time. Trust me when I tell you that there are MANY people who regularly engage in "conflict communication", from law enforcement officers with years of experience to clinical social workers with post graduate degrees, who are clearly doing things wrong and sometimes making bad situations worse. Many times I have seen caseworkers refuse to believe that a mentally disturbed person is truly out of control and moments away from flipping out and that they can still "reason with" an individual in this state. This book should be REQUIRED READING for all Criminal Justice and Social Work students. It is that important. Truly groundbreaking concepts that can save your life, or at least make it easier.
In the author's own words This book will give you "...the ability to deal with someone who is acting immorally and/or illegally -- without disrespecting...that person." Rory Miller has taken the theories of Sigmund Freud and mixed them with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, presenting us all with techniques to use when working with difficult individuals. Along the way, he also explains why we react the way we do and say the things we say, presenting our everyday conversations as "scripts" (a simple example -- if you say "Hi, I'm Joe" to another person, you start a script which will not feel finished until the other person offers their name. Try it). The idea is that if your harmless, everyday conversations can be scripted, so can your conflicts.

While Miller deeply investigates concepts that delve into the Freudian world as well as survival beliefs that are hardwired in our brains, you do not have to be a college professor to understand what the author is teaching. He presents everything in an easily understandable, at times slightly humorous way, thus entertaining while enlightening us on how to better our communications skills.
I have been involved in the martial arts since I was in high school over forty years ago and have been a Shotokan karate instructor for several years. I am also a professional anthropologist with graduate degrees in physical anthropology. Being a huge fan of Rory Miller and Marc "Animal" MacYoung, I immediately ordered this book and dove right in. I recognized that this program for "conflict communication" has gone well beyond the usual readership interested in violence and personal defense and should appeal to literally everyone. The book could well be used in anthropology classes focused on human behavior in general as well as management seminars worried about leadership in the workplace. The reason I'm writing this review (when I usually don't bother commenting on ), is Miller's passage about "reality maps" on page 53. This discussion could easily describe human "culture" in general in the sense of its being "second nature," and not a direct understanding of reality per se. Honestly, this book seems almost to be a work of solid social science that far transcends the rather narrow genre of personal defense and combatives literature. It should be on everyone's bookshelf!
